This is according to the Astan (custodianship) of Hazrat Abbas (AS) holy shrine that said the number of Arbaeen pilgrims exceeded 22.02 million by Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) said from August 15 to September 3, a total of 1,850 flights brought some 250,000 pilgrims from different countries to Iraq for Arbaeen.

Many more foreign pilgrims arrived in the Arab country via land border crossings.

In other related news, Khalid al-Muhanna, the spokesman for Iraq’s interior ministry, said the Arbaeen special security plan, has been successfully implemented so far and will continue until the return home of the last pilgrim.

The Arbaeen mourning ceremony stands as an extraordinary and colossal religious congregation on a global scale.

This profound event signifies the 40th day following Ashura, the solemn commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the revered grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

The pilgrims, mainly from Iraq and Iran, travel long routes on foot to the holy city.
