The Quran Institute affiliated to the Astan (custodianship) of Hazrat Abbas (AS) holy shrine has organized the event for elementary and high school students, Al-Kafeel reported.
The education departments of Iraq’s 14 governorates have also cooperated in holding the Quranic event.
According to Ahmed al-Sheikh Ali, an official with the Astan, the contest is aimed at promoting the culture of Quran and Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).
He added that the Astan has planned and implemented a series of other Quranic activities and programs for that purpose.
Hassan al-Shuwaili, an education ministry official, in an address to the opening ceremony praised the Astan for its educational and Quranic programs and highlighted the importance of such Quranic events for students who are facing various cultural onslaughts.
The competition is being held in the categories of recitation as well as memorization of 5 Juzes (parts) of the Quran for elementary school students and memorization of 10 Juzes for high school students.
