Following five official complaints by the Pakistani government between May 5 and May 14, Twitter decided the remove the accounts and certain tweets. Twitter, which was once shut down in Pakistan in May 2012, complied to the demands swiftly.
The banned accounts included anti-Islamic material and competitions to draw insulting pictures of the Prophet Muhammad.
Chilling Effects Clearinghouse, an online censorship monitoring body, said that it was the first time Twitter had conformed to the request of Pakistan to ban certain accounts and messages.
Video-sharing website YouTube has been blocked in Pakistan since 2012 after failing to remove an offensive short film made about the Prophet Muhammad, although the parliament voted to lift the ban earlier this month.
