TEHRAN (IQNA) –  Cambridge Central Mosque is organizing an open day during Saturday’s Mill Road Winter Fair, with guided tours of their new building.

The leader of Cambridge City Council, Cllr Lewis Herbert, has encouraged visitors to the fair to take the opportunity to stop by and visit the mosque.

The open day will take place from 10.30am to 4.00pm on Saturday, with free activities for visitors of all ages, and includes cultural material displays and an exhibition on Islamic science, highlighting the huge number of breakthroughs we now benefit from.

Cllr Herbert, Leader of Cambridge City Council, said: “I urge everyone who is going to Mill Road Winter Fair on Saturday to go and see this stunning place of worship for our Muslim community, that includes people from many different nationalities. It’s a community of which we are incredibly proud.  This open day is a great opportunity to showcase what is a beautiful building and garden – the greenest mosque in Britain and one of the greenest buildings in our city.”

Cllr Anna Smith, local councillor for Romsey and Executive Councillor for Communities, added: “The new mosque is a wonderful building, and Labour councillors received such a warm welcome when we visited recently for a tour. I was particularly struck by how carefully the environmental considerations have been designed in, and how practicality, symbolism and beauty have been woven together. As a local councillor, I'm very proud to welcome this new community and this amazing building into Romsey. I wish the worshippers every success for their open day on Saturday and for all the years ahead.”

There was controversy earlier this week when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the mosque’s official opening, with protests organized on Kings Parade and Mill Road.  Cllr Herbert highlighted councilors’ disappointment at his presence in the city.

“Along with a large number of Cambridge residents, including members of the Muslim community, we did not support President Erdogan coming to Cambridge yesterday.  His record of persecution and human rights abuses, most recently the killing of Kurds in the continuing Turkish invasion of northern Syria, is an outrage against humanity.

“In contrast, tomorrow’s event embodies the true values that the mosque champions - peace, integration and inclusion.  That is at the heart of what they, Cambridge and all our communities are committed to.”
