TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranian President appreciated the Bangladeshi government and people’s hosting of Rohingya Muslim refugees.

In a meeting with the new ambassador of Bangladesh to Iran on Sunday, Rouhani expressed Iran’s readiness to continue helping the refugees.

He also highlighted the common grounds between the two Muslim nations of Iran and Bangladesh, saying Tehran is ready to develop ties with Dhaka in political, economic and cultural fields.

The Bangladeshi envoy, AFM Gousal Azam Sarkerm, in this meeting submitted his credentials to Rouhani and conveyed the warm greetings of his country’s president and prime minister of the Iranian president.

He also said the two countries have excellent friendly ties, adding that his mission is further expanding the relations.

Sarkerm also invited Rouhani to attend the upcoming summit of the Developing-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8) in Dhaka.

Thousands of Rohingya Muslims were killed, injured, arbitrarily arrested, or raped by Myanmar soldiers and Buddhist mobs mainly between November 2016 and August 2017, when many of the surviving members of the community started fleeing to Bangladesh en masse.

At least 740,000 members of the mostly stateless group fled across Myanmar's western border into Bangladesh after the military crackdown.
