TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iranian lawmaker underlined the importance of the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage and said it is a duty of the government to facilitate Iranian pilgrims’ trip to Iraq for Arbaeen.

Ali Akbar Karimi, a member of the parliament’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Commission, said the annual pilgrimage is very influential in the region in spiritual and political terms and the government should take the necessary measures to help people take part in the event.

He added that members of the commission plan to hold a meeting with the Arbaeen Headquarters, which is charged with coordinating efforts for facilitating the pilgrimage.

Arbaeen comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

In the past few years, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world took part in the mourning ceremonies in the Iraqi holy city marking Arbaeen.

Arbaeen falls on Tuesday, October 30, this year.
