Iran, Italy’s Islamic Community to Develop Religious Cooperation

TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Iranian Cultural Center in Italy signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Italy’s Islamic Religious Community on cooperation in religious and cultural fields.

According to the website of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO), The MoU was signed by the Iranian Cultural Attaché in Italy Akbar Gholi and President of the Islamic Religious Community of Italy Comunita Religiosa Islámica (COREIS) Yahya Sergio Yahe Pallavicini.

It was signed during a recent visit by Pallavicini to the Iranian Cultural Center in Rome.

The MoU, which has ten clauses, entails cooperation in such areas as holding joint programs, translation and publication of religious books, mounting photo exhibitions and religious, cultural and academic interactions.

The two sides also agreed to annually hold a joint seminar featuring an issue in the contemporary Muslim world during the Islamic Unity Week.

Founded in 1993, COREIS is the only officially recognized organization representing Muslims in Italy.

It has offices and branches in various cities of the South European country.

Muslim presence in the country dates back to the 9th century, when Sicily came under control of the Abbasid Caliphate.

An estimated 1.6 million Muslims live in Italy, meaning it has the fourth largest Muslim population in Europe.
